a fantastic read.....
Its been sometime since I read a book incessantly, cover to cover , only takin a break to sleep at night ( while still holding the book in my hands) ...No,it wasnt some really thrilling book with a lotta chases in it, and it didnt have anything to do with espionage, and its not the kinda genre that would generally evoke such voracious reading...
HUNGRY TIDE: There s not much to the story, its bout this female(an expatriate), on an expedition to learn about a particular type of dolphin species...and then there s this middle aged delhi guy who acts a tranlslator during their journey...there s no chemistry between the two...there's a local fisherman who is sorta the protagonist in the novel, but hardly speaks a word....the climax isnt all that great....the book is slightly long too...
Hmmmm...By now you must be wondering what made me read this seemingly booooring book...
Here s what I really liked about the book:
Firstly, it was the location that it was set in- the marshy wet lands of Sunderbans... the only water body i ve seen till now is the stretch of beach in chennai.... so jus reading bout an exotic place such as the sunderbans, where boats are the only means of transport, got me all excited...the flooded forests ,eerie nights, tigers looming in the dark, crocs submerged in the water, delapidated boats ... it was a spectacular setting...
Also the the ability of the author to portray the scenes vividly is remarkable. We can somehow empathise with the character and for most part of the book we get a birds eye view of whats happening...The book is very descriptive, which is partly why I like it and although there aren't many twists in it , it still is a fantastic read...
Its got me all geared up take a holiday sometime soon...
